Dear members and friends of LCR,
This Sunday, May 19 (and Wednesday the 22nd ), our sermon series – Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope – will conclude with my message on “Common Fears: Sickness, Aging, and Death.” The Resurrection Choir will sing at the 8:00 service and holy communion will be served. At the 10:00 service, we will witness the baptism of three children – Alexander Lorence Zumbach; Gavin Joseph Barnd; and Kenley Marie Gericke.
We will also welcome the following new members at both services: Jason & Rachel Barndt, Lillyan, Carson, and Gavin; Carolyn Coselman; Stefanie Coselman and Johnnie; Donna Henderson; Brad & Julie Hopkins; Tom & Carol Lillevig; Tom & Kathy Peterman; Kristi Scott; and Rachel Sutton.
A service of confirmation for our 21 8th graders and their families will take place at 11:15 on Sunday. Their names are listed below under Youth Discipleship.

Pastor Dennis’ farewell sermons will be next Sunday, May 26th, with receptions between services on the 26th and an open house on Wednesday the 29th from 7-9 pm. The 6 pm service on the 29th will include some comments from LCR members. All are welcome.
A Message from the Church Council – Brothers and sisters in Christ, there is a lot of activity in the church with the upcoming retirement of Pastor Dennis. The council has gathered a set of names for the call committee and will select the members soon. In addition, we have finished the search for an interim senior pastor and are pleased to announce that Pastor Denny Wright will be starting on May 28th. The council thanks the congregation for their prayers and support during this exciting time, and thanks the staff, worship team, and volunteer team for their extra efforts. – LCR Council
Pastor Denny Wright is a retired ELCA pastor who grew up in Cedar Rapids, graduating from Washington High School. He attended Bemidji State and taught high school in Minnesota. Denny then moved back to Cedar Rapids to teach at Kennedy High, and married Winnie Lowe (a Linn-Mar grad) in 1967. He attended Northwestern Lutheran Seminary and served at churches in Iowa, Texas, Kansas, and Minnesota. While in Kansas, Denny served as Assistant to the Bishop of the Central States Synod, ELCA. Denny & Winnie recently moved back to the area after he had served as Interim Pastor in several congregations in Minnesota. They have four adult children and six grandchildren. Denny is looking forward to this fourth experience as an Interim Pastor. This will be the third ‘Lutheran Church of the Resurrection’ he has served!

- One Year Chronological Bible Study (fellowship hall) – A fascinating way to read through the Bible in one year. Led by Dan Tegtmeier.
- Reading Biblical Literature: Old Testament (fellowship hall) – video presentations by Prof. Craig Koester of Luther Seminary, led by Bob Erlandson. This week’s topic is “Ezra and Nehemiah- Rebuilding Jerusalem after Exile.”
- Genesis (conference room) – An exploration of the first book in the Old Testament. Led by Jim & Linda Cornally.
‘One Day In May’ Volunteers – 45 students from Marion High School spent Monday the 13th at Resurrection taking part in a Take Away Hunger event, mulching the playground, and painting rooms in the education wing. Thanks to God for these active young people and their serving hearts.
Alyssa Weaver Update – Our seminary intern from 2017-18 will graduate from Luther Seminary this Sunday, May 19. Her ordination service will be on Saturday, June 1 at 11 am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sparta, Wisconsin. A reception will be held following the service at her home congregation, Peace Lutheran Church, in Tomah, WI. LCR friends are invited to attend. Our Savior’s Lutheran in Iola, Wisconsin has called her as their pastor.
Lifetree Café gathers on Friday noon for an hour of coffee, light refreshments, and conversation around relevant issues. We will meet on May 24 to discuss “An Immigrant in the Sanctuary: When Faith and Politics Collide.”
Fellowship Time is held in the café and fellowship hall on Sunday mornings from 9:00-10:15 am. The menu includes Dunkin’ Donuts, Wit’s End scones, juice, and coffee.
May/June Mission Envelopes are designated for Community Health Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids. The Clinic provides free medical, dental, vision, and prescription services to 7,000 people in need each year.
Offering Envelopes – Effective May 1st we stopped sending offering envelopes to anyone who is signed up for Simply Giving. Special envelopes that are included in the mailed envelope packets throughout the year are now available at the Welcome Center literature rack. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Recording Secretary Joan Meyer at 393-6972.
In addition to offering envelopes, other ways of supporting LCR include: Simply Giving – join over 90 LCR families who give regularly through automatic drafts from their checking or savings accounts. You can elect to give weekly, monthly, or quarterly. Enrollment forms are in your Enough packets. PayPal – there is a Donate button you can click on our website for giving. Our Giving Kiosk by the library will receive your credit card gifts. Give+ Mobile Phone App can be downloaded from Google Play or iTunes.
