Dear members and friends of LCR,
This Sunday, July 15th, and Wednesday, July 18th, we will begin a new sermon series called “Why? Making Sense of God’s Will.” Pastor Miranda will preach on “Why Do the Innocent Suffer?”. We’ll look at what the Bible says about suffering; how the common notion that “everything happens for a reason” leads people to turn away from God when suffering comes; and how different kinds of suffering (natural disasters, sickness, and suffering caused by accidents) relate to God’s presence among us. Holy communion will be served at 8:15, with a children’s message at 9:45.
We will send our EDGE youth on their way to Houston tomorrow for their mission trip. Please keep them in your prayers.
Remember the upcoming picnic and canoe trip on Saturday, July 28th, as well as our farewell Sunday for our intern Alyssa on July 29th. Don’t forget to support her with a financial gift for her senior year of seminary. A letter went out recently with a reply envelope for your gifts. There are extra envelopes here at the church on a tall table as you walk in. We have had a very generous response so far from several of our members!
There are other unique events and opportunities that we want to alert you to through this weekly e-note. Our website (www.lcrmarion.org) provide more details on each topic.
Blessings to you,
The EDGE high school mission trip will depart for Houston, TX this Saturday, July 14. They will again assist children and adults in poverty through various projects. They will share about their experience in worship on August 5 and 8. Please keep the group in your prayers as they travel and serve.

Marion Cares Backpacks – If you would like to help a local student this fall, please pick up one of the blue Marion Cares cards on the gathering space table. It has a list of items a student will need for the upcoming school year. Buy a backpack and the listed items and return them to the church office by Sunday, July 29th. Remember to include the blue card with your backpack so it gets to the right child. Our challenge goal is to fill 50 backpacks for the fall; we have 12 left to fill.
New Directory – We need people to be on our new Photo Directory team! We have not had a new directory since 2012 and plan to do one this October. We would like 6 people to make up a team to get this project rolling. Alyssa will be meeting with the team this Thursday, July 19th at 6:00 pm. If you are willing to be on this team, jot a note on your welcome card or contact Alyssa (Alyssa@lcrmarion.org).
FLY delivery people are needed every Monday during the summer to distribute sack lunches to children in our community. If you can drive meals to feeding sites on Mondays go to http://signup.com/go/SKJgrTS. Lunches are picked up at First Methodist in downtown Marion. You can volunteer on Fridays if that works better for you. Contact email@example.com with questions.
Building Safety Team – Can you help us by joining this important group? Farewell gift for intern Alyssa – We will have to say goodbye to our seminary intern Alyssa Weaver on Sunday, July 29. A letter and reply envelope was sent this week with an opportunity to contribute financially to a congregational gift for her seminary costs of tuition, room and board, and books. You can make out a check to LCR for any amount and put “seminary scholarship fund” on the memo line. The giving kiosk by the library is set up to receive credit card gifts as well. Please submit all gifts by Wednesday, July 25 so the total can be tabulated.
July-August mission envelopes are designated for the Catherine McAuley Center in Cedar Rapids. Their mission is to directly minister to women and to the economically poor, to provide temporary shelter for women and children in crisis, to assist women in attaining safe, affordable permanent housing, and to help individuals and families access medical and community resources. A check for $980 was delivered to Community Health Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids last week from our May-June mission envelopes. Thanks for your generosity!
Simply Giving – You can elect to have a weekly or monthly gift withdrawn from your checking or savings account. Enrollment forms are in the info rack by the Welcome Center. Over a third of our General Fund offerings come from Simply Giving families.
Giving through VANCO – You can give electronically to LCR through: the giving kiosk by the library or the Give+ mobile app, available from Google Play or iTunes. Once your information has been entered on the app, you can give to LCR anytime, anywhere. Another option is to send a text message to the number (319) 320-1628 from your mobile phone. You will receive a one-time registration link to enter credit or debit card payment information. After that, you can simply text the amount you want to give and it will process automatically.
