Resurrection E-news: Sunday, December 30, 2018

Dear members and friends of LCR,

As we approach the end of the year I want to thank all of you for the warm welcome I have received from each of you. It has been a joy getting to know many of you during my time here at Resurrection and I look forward to getting to know even more of you during 2019!

I hope to see many of you Sunday morning, December 30, when we will have one service at 9:00 AM when we will hear the stories of familiar Christmas carols and share in holy communion. As a special treat, after the service we hope you’ll bring some of your Christmas goodies to share over coffee.

Christmas Eve was a wonderful culmination of the year and the Rediscover the Joy of Christmas sermon series! I am pleased to share that you gave $8,206 that will go to Willis Dady Homeless Services, Mission of Hope, and Camp Chisomo.

I have just a few reminders as we finish out the year:

  • Sunday School & Adult Faith Formation will resume on January 6;
  • Evening Song, Confirmation, WNL & EDGE will resume on January 9; and
  • The Half-Truths sermon series will start on Sunday, January 6 as Pastor Dennis tackles the idea “Everything Happens for a Reason.”

Thanks to all of you who have turned in your pledge forms for 2019. We have 222 commitments of $ 517,694 for the 2019 General Fund. If you haven’t yet turned in your pledge form, it isn’t too late! We would love to get as many pledge forms turned as we can because it helps the 2019 budget process move more smoothly.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to check out the other opportunities and announcements below.

Blessings,

Allyn Glenn-Angell

SERVE

Christmas Eve Worship services could not have happened without the help of so many people who assisted in worship itself, or behind the scenes, before and after. Thank you all for making Christmas Eve Worship a truly blessed event.

Un-hanging of the Greens – We had a great turnout when we decorated the church earlier this month. Thank you to everyone who helped – it was a really fun time! Now the time has come to put the decorations away. We’ll meet this Saturday, January 5th at 9:30 am. We are looking forward to another good batch of helpers and more great fellowship. Please let Marcia know if you are able to be there – marcia@lcrmarion.org.

The generous spirit of Christmas at LCR means over 100 hats, mittens, and gloves were delivered to Mission of Hope and $570 was sent to Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. It warms their heads and hands – and our hearts too! Thanks to you all.

Thanks to all who provided a wonderful Christmas to 7 local families in the Marion Independent district through our 2018 Giving Tree! – Madonna Putnam

YOUTH DISCIPLESHIP

Sunday School does not meet today, but will resume on January 6. Confirmation, WNL, and EDGE will not meet on the 2nd but will resume on the 9th.

EDGE Service Crew is back to help you by: taking down Christmas lights, moving things in your house, cleaning gutters, shoveling snow, or something else you need done. Call on our high school students to help as they work to raise money for their summer mission trip. Contact Katie with any jobs you may have – katie@lcrmarion.org.

OUTREACH

Lifetree Café gathers on Friday noon for an hour of coffee, light refreshments, and conversation around relevant issues. We will meet on January 4th to discuss “Living a Lie: The perils of a double life.”

ADULT DISCIPLESHIP

New Small Groups starting Sunday, January 6 at 9:05 am:

One Year Chronological Bible Study A fascinating way to read through the Bible in one year – in only fifteen minutes per day! Now you can gain a better understanding of the order of biblical events and the historical context in which they unfolded. Led by Dan Tegtmeier.

Who is the Holy Spirit? – We say it every Sunday: “I believe in the Holy Spirit,” and yet what does that mean? How can we believe in something, or rather someone, that we don’t even know? Led by Donna Dennis.

Half Truths They are simple phrases, ‘Everything happens for a reason’ and four others. They sound Christian, like something you might find in the Bible, but are they?

Do You Think I’m Beautiful? – In this book, author Angela Thomas invites you to awaken your passion and glimpse your deepest desires, to voice your longing to be loved with an ultimate love, and to fall into the embrace of the One who asks you to dance. Led by Mary Kay Pinckney (2nd or 3rd Sundays at 6:30 pm)

Reading Biblical Literature: The New Testament – Even if you hadn’t attended the study group this past fall, please come and join our “Reading Bible Literature” study Sunday mornings at 9:05 starting on January 6th. Experience how Prof. Craig Koester’s stimulating video presentations on the Old Testament followed by interesting group discussion can help increase your understanding and faith. Led by Bob Erlandson.

‘ENOUGH’ STEWARDSHIP APPEAL

So far we have received these commitments for 2019:

222 cards for General Fund                                  $517,694

169 cards for Growth & Outreach Fund              $124,202

These totals include 36 Simply Giving commitments for the 2018 General Fund and 21 commitments for the 2018 Growth & Outreach Fund that would carry over to 2019 unless we hear otherwise from the participants.

In comparison, by December 31 of 2018 we had received:

222 General Fund commitments                        $524,538

196 Growth & Outreach commitments              $127,326

Our final total for 2018 General Fund was $533,578 from 227 giving units.

You can place your 2019 commitment form in the offering plate today. Extra forms are in the chair pouches or at the tall table by the usher’s stand. You may also send it in or drop it off at the church office. These commitments form the foundation for our 2019 spending plan and commitments to our mission partners.

On January 8, our Budget Team will meet to draft a spending plan for 2019. Each year we ask our members and friends to turn in Estimate of Giving Cards so that our Budget Team and Church Council are able to set a realistic ministry spending plan for the coming year. This allows us to make the most of every dollar given to the church. 75-80% of our resources for mission and ministry come from those who fill out commitment cards each year.

GIVE

Year-End Giving – LCR needs about $5,400 in General Fund receipts by December 31 in order to end the year in the black. Our receipts goal by year-end is $672,550, which is 97% of the 2018 budget. Each year we strive to under-spend our budget by 3%, and we are on track to do that again this year. Several members have sent in their RMD’s (Required Minimum Distributions) from their retirement funds in recent days – thanks to those who have done so. Over $2,600 have been received from the special mailing that was sent out earlier this month. Thanks to those who helped in that way.

November/December Mission Envelopes are designated for the Marion Food Pantry.

In addition to offering envelopes, other ways of supporting LCR include: Simply Giving – join over 90 LCR families who give regularly through automatic drafts from their checking or savings accounts. You can elect to give weekly, monthly, or quarterly. Enrollment forms are in your Enough packets. PayPal – there is a Donate button you can click on our website for giving. Our Giving Kiosk by the library will receive your credit card gifts.  Give+ Mobile Phone App can be downloaded from Google Play or iTunes.
