Dear members and friends of LCR,
This Sunday, February 25, will be Stephen Ministry Sunday, as we commission eleven LCR members to be Stephen Ministers. The gospel for the day from Mark 8 describes how Jesus told his disciples about his impending suffering, death, and resurrection. The core truth in the story is found in Jesus’ words: “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” What does that mean for our time and place? I will share a sermon on being “people of the bruised shoulder” with a “cross-eyed” faith.
Stephen Ministry is a special ministry of care and concern for others. This culminates a period of extensive training and preparation. These Stephen Ministers will work with people in our congregation and community who are experiencing life crises: Kelly Belin, Marilyn Carstens, Linda Christiansen, Jen Christopherson, Julie Gilmore, Mary Hajek, John Howe, Sheryl Knodle, Samantha Ryan, Symon Sanborn, and Linda Sundermeyer.
There are other upcoming events and opportunities that we want to alert you to through this weekly e-note. Our website (www.lcrmarion.org) provide more details on each topic.
Blessings to you,

Churches of Marion Food Pantry “Reverse Lent” Giving Project – During Lent, you can pick up a Lent Reading Plan at the church with key verses and suggested food donations for the Pantry. Each day you will be able to read an inspiring verse of scripture, and then set aside (or purchase) a donation for the Pantry. Please bring your donations to the church and put them in the bin marked “Reverse Lent Project.” Contact Cari (email@example.com) if you have questions about this giving project.
Marion Cares – Help us by preparing and serving a meal to our Marion Cares kids this winter/spring. Dinners will be needed at Marion Village on Mondays: 2/26, 4/9, 5/7; and sack lunches for Thursdays: 3/22, 5/10. The meals can be quite simple – recipes for Walking Tacos and BBQ Chicken Sandwiches are posted on the entryway bulletin board – or you can use one of your own favorites. This is a project you can do with your family, co-workers, friends, or small group – anyone who wants to make a positive impact on local children’s lives! Sign up by contacting Jen Christopherson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Mission envelopes for January-February will be designated for FLY (Feeding Lunches to Youth). FLY serves sack lunches Monday through Friday during the summer months to at-risk children in Marion. The lunches are prepared and delivered each day out of the First United Methodist Church by volunteers. In addition to your mission offering, you could volunteer to make lunches next summer or be part of the delivery crew.
Your gifts to the Growth & Outreach Fund in February provide salary, benefits, and housing for our seminary intern, Alyssa Weaver; support for Marion Cares, Habitat for Humanity, and Camp Chisomo scholarships for those going to Malawi in June; and snow removal and facility maintenance.
General Fund gifts support our local ministries and programs led by our staff and carried out by our members and friends. Your General Fund gifts also support our mission partners locally and around the world. Our monthly need will be about $57,800 for an annual budget of $693,350. Thanks for your generous, faithful support so far in 2018!
