Our senior pastor recently left a magazine article in my box here at church. It was titled, “Thinking of Eutychus.” It had a picture of a young person sleeping on his laptop keyboard. “Okay,” I thought, “my interest is piqued.” I sat down and read the article and then found it online. Click here to read the article.
In short, the article talks about the church’s inability to connect with young adults and the reasons why. It uses the new testament story of Eutychus as a platform to urge church leaders to help understand and reach out to the young adults in and out of their congregations.
I have sent this article out to all of the young adults whom I have an email for and we will be including it in our discussion at our next IGNITE event on Thursday, April 8th here at LCR in the YAC from 6-8pm. We continue to read and discuss the book “UnChristian” and the book is referenced in this article. Last month’s discussion from the book focused on the issue of homosexuality and I have invited all of our young adults to attend the homosexuality seminar that is being led by Professor Craig Nessan of Wartburg Seminary here at LCR on Thursday, April 15th at 7:00pm.
Borrowing from the article; Jesus said two simple words to those he called to be his disciples, “Follow me.” There was no poking, prodding, or branding.
Am I interacting with others in a way that would make them want to follow Jesus? Are you? How many times have I acted or felt like Eutychus? These are tough questions that we have to ask ourselves every day-tough questions Jesus is asking us every day.
