Lenten Suppers will be 5:30-7:00 pm each week.

February 22: IGNITE Young Adult ministry – soup supper to support Unakho Children’s Home in Cape Town, South Africa

February 29: E.D.G.E. – potato bar to fund high school mission trip to Cass Lake Indian Reservation in Minnesota

March 7: Wednesday Night Live – taco bar to benefit Crossroads Mission

March 14: Resurrection Choir – soups, etc. to fund new choir robes

March 21: Comforting Hands Quilters – scalloped potatoes and ham

March 28: College Mission Trips: meal will support students going to Malawi, Ghana, South Africa, Zambia and Brazil this spring and summer.

All families are encouraged to participate together in daily devotions throughout Lent this year.
Devotion booklets are available at the Adult Faith Development table in the gathering area.
Weekly devotions are also being held each Sunday during Lent at 9:45 in the fellowship hall….
a great opportunity to learn new ways to hold a devotion at home!

Dan Dennis with the coveted Chili Challenge trophy.

The winning entry in this year’s Chili Challenge was Dan Dennis’ Late Night Chili.  This is Dan’s first win after participating in the Challenge since the Challenge began. Once again, strong support by the youth voting for their favorite helped secure the championship.

In past years Dan would prepare his chili a full day before the event believing that letting the flavors meld together overnight in the refrigerator created a better chili. This year, however, Dan was celebrating his 50th birthday the day before the Challenge and didn’t cook the chili until 1:00 am on Sunday. The shorter melding time proved to be just what the chili needed to take home the coveted travelling trophy.

The warm winter weather and lack of snow for sledding meant a lighter turnout at the annual fellowship event than in past years. But those who did come out had a great time tasting a variety of chili and playing board games. Thanks to the Fellowship Committee for sponsoring this annual event.

We have opened registration for Summer 2012 Camp EWALU!  Visit www.ewalu.org for more information on the opportunities for campers.  You can register online by clicking HERE, at LCR or mail the form in yourself.  If you directly register with EWALU, please let the church office know so that scholarships can be shared appropriately.  Early registration deadline is Feb 19 (to turn into the church).  We have selected Weeks 3 & 5 as “LCR Weeks”

February 2012 Calendar of Church Events

Are you ready for a delicious day of chili tasting and some outstanding sledding at Squaw Creek Park?  Join in the fun on Sunday, February 12.  Doors will open at 1:30pm, chili tasting begins at 2:00pm.  We’ll need some volunteers to make this event a reality: ‘Chili Challengers’ to make and enter their chili and helpers to do small but important tasks prior to and on the day of the challenge.  Contact Michelle Shaw at michelle_shaw@southslope.net or 319.329.2984 to sign up your chili or help out in other ways.

Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of Lutheran Church of the Resurrection will be held on Sunday, January 29 at 12:15 in the worship room.

The agenda includes:

• An update on our visioning process and “Rejoice-Envision-Celebrate” appeal
• Reports on LCR’s ministries and mission partners such as San Lucas Lutheran in Eagle Pass,Texas
• Election of Council and committee members
• Approval of the 2012 budget

Those on the ballot this year include:

In the weeks after Christmas and before Ash Wednesday the church observes the season of Epiphany. The chosen readings are meant to shed light on the One  who is Light for the World. We begin this new year with a sermon series that looks at Jesus of Nazareth, the claim that he is God’s anointed one (the Christ) and what that means to each of us.

Jan 1 & 4: Looking for Peace
The search for peace has been a long and broad effort by many. Nation struggles with nation. Family members experience conflict.  Individuals are unsettled.  The story of Jesus presentation in the temple tells us that true peace comes through seeing God. For this  reason, God has sent Christ to us – that we might know God and know real peace.

Jan 8 & 11: A Voice from Heaven
As Jesus comes out of the water at his baptism he sees the heavens torn apart and hears a Voice that says, “You are my Son. I love you. I take pleasure in you.” Not only does the Voice clue us in to the identity of Jesus, but it reveals the message that God wants us to hear for our own lives and what it means to believe in this man, Jesus.

Jan 15 & 18: Come and See
Jesus of Nazareth comes on the scene, calling disciples to follow him. When Nathanael doubts whether anything good can come out of lowly Nazareth, Philip  invites him to come and see Jesus for himself. In our day, we can be like Philip and invite others to “come and see” Jesus at work in the life of our congregation.

Jan 22 & 25: This World Passing Away
Faith in Christ frees us from the dominant ideologies  of our culture to see that our relationships, emotions and possessions, while part of our life, are no longer allowed to dictate our existence.

Jan 29 & Feb 1: Trouble in the Sermon
The power of the Holy Spirit was at work in both     Jesus’ authority as a teacher and healer of a man possessed by a demon. Jesus’ teaching transforms human lives, then and now, as we move from knowing some things about Jesus to actually experiencing his liberating power.

Kenneth O. Petrick, 78, of 433 42nd St. NE, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. The Rev. Dennis Johnson will officiate. Inurnment: Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Janice; three daughters, Kendra Langert of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Lauri (David) Traub of Lakeville, Minn., and Nancy (Michael) Almasi of Robins; and a sister, Marly (Bob) Larson of Mahtomedi, Minn. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Caitlin, Jordan and Haley Traub; Kendall Langert; Connor, Brooke and Caleb Almasi; and his dog, Eddie.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Frank.

Ken was born April 2, 1933, in Peever, S.D., the son of Theodore and Claire (Carlson) Petrick. He graduated from Iowa State University and was in transportation management for several trucking companies until his retirement in 2003. He married Janice K. Warren on Feb. 21, 1959, in Blue Earth, Minn.

Ken was a faithful member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, a school board chairman in Rosemount, Minn., and a member of the Jaycees for several years. He was very proud to be an American and proudly served in the Marines during the Korean War.

Ken was very handy and enjoyed doing home repair. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his beloved family.

Ken was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
