Resurrection E-News: May 21, 2017

LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE RESURRECTION e-news

Dear members and friends of LCR,

This Sunday we will continue our five week sermon series on “The Power of Purpose” with a look at the purpose of discipleship. Pastor Miranda will preach on our call to be Jesus’ disciples at all three services. At 11:00, 18 8th graders will affirm their baptismal vows in our annual confirmation service. At the 8:15 & 9:45 services, our Malawi mission trip team of high school youth and adults will be commissioned for their upcoming trip to Africa in June. At 9:30 in the fellowship hall, we will show a new one hour video by Rick Steves, the PBS travel guide, on the story of Martin Luther and the Reformation.

There are other upcoming events and opportunities that we want to alert you to through this weekly e-note. The monthly Crosstalk and our website provide more details on each topic.

See you on Sunday!

Pastor Dennis

WORSHIP

Thanks to Matt & Tammy Evans for their many years of faithful service as our contemporary worship leader and children’s ministry director. This Sunday will be their last Sunday in those roles. We will have a reception on Sunday, June 11 from 9:15-10:15 to honor them for their dedication and impact on our congregation.

Summer Worship Schedule begins on Sunday, May 28 with traditional First Light worship at 8:15, Summer Song contemporary worship at 10:15, and Evening Song worship on Wednesdays at 6 pm.

Spirit Stories – Pentecost is a celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit – and we are looking for brief stories of how YOU have experienced the Holy Spirit in your life. They do not need to be long or detailed. The stories will be part of the choir presentation on Sunday, June 4. All stories will be confidential. Please email any stories to Cheryl Wilms (ehcheryl@aol.com) or leave in the church office. Let’s be witnesses – share your story, give God the Glory!

GROW

Sunday School wraps up another year this Sunday morning. Along with Tammy Evans, we thank all the teachers, helpers, and students for a great year of growing in Christ.

Adult Bible Study concludes their study of Samuel and David this Sunday at 9:45. Special thanks to Jim & Linda Cornally for leading the group this past year.

SERVE

FLY (Feeding Lunches to Youth) is looking for a few items to help offset costs for our meals this year. If you are able, please pick up some peanut butter, juice boxes, and/or sandwich bags and place them in the marked bin in the gathering space. Thank you for helping local kids have a good lunch each weekday this summer.

Summer Sidekicks will be needed for Marion Cares Summer program beginning June 12th. Adult and high school volunteers are welcome to help us Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays from 11 am to 1 pm. Contact information to sign up is on the entryway bulletin board, or email laura@marioncares.org. Save the date of Saturday, July 29th for the Marion Cares “Uplift Uptown” from 3-6 pm in Marion Square Park. This will be a “friend-raiser” with church bands, food, and testimonials from kids, parents, and staff on the ministry of Marion Cares.

Matthew 25’s Transform Week is coming on June 26-30. You can volunteer for one day or a whole week alongside friends, family, co-workers, or make new friends while you serve. 12 neighborhood projects are planned on the SW side of Cedar Rapids. LCR will provide lunches for around 50 workers on one of those days. Watch for more information in future e-news blasts.

GIVE

Mission Envelope Gifts for May and June are going to the Community Free Health Clinic in Cedar Rapids. The medical clinic serves uninsured and underserved patients on a first-come, first-served basis, free of charge – no appointment needed. They also serve dental needs, eye care, and help with prescriptions. Their website- www.communityhfc.org – has wonderful ministry stories of how the Clinic makes a difference in the lives of people in need.
