Resurrection E-news: June 18, 2017

Dear members and friends of LCR,

This Sunday, June 18, we will continue a six-week sermon series on Moses: the Reluctant Prophet. A highlight this week will be a video trip to Egypt and Mt. Sinai, narrated by Adam Hamilton. I will share some thoughts in the sermon on God’s call to Moses from the burning bush to lead his people out of slavery to freedom. Connections will be made to our lives through four questions: How do you deal with injustice in our day? What happens when the bottom falls out and you end up in a wilderness like Moses? Where is your holy ground? How can you respond to God’s call to do difficult things for this world?

A reminder that our summer worship schedule is Sundays at 8:15 & 10:15, and Wednesday nights at 6.

There are other upcoming events and opportunities that we want to alert you to through this weekly e-note. Our website (www.lcrmarion.org) provide more details on each topic.

See you on Sunday!

Pastor Dennis

SERVE

Our Malawi Mission Trip group left on Saturday, June 3 and returns on June 20. They are serving in the village of Mpyupyu in Malawi. They are leading Camp Chisomo, where this team has been working since 2010. Camp Chisomo is a place where kids can be kids, where they can learn about God’s grace and the power it gives to live with dignity in the present and with hope for the future. The team is teaching biblical curriculum to local children, running group activities, and building continued relationships with members of the community. Please keep these young servants in your prayers: Jessi Heidelbauer, Adam Lau, Ally Edwards, Kayleigh Akiens, Aletheia Burritt, Melanie Phelan, Sydney Smith, Nora Read, Luke Sloterdyk, Ethan Schmidt, Jon Wisner, and Katie Kascel.

Matthew 25 will host their Transform Week from  June 26 – 30. LCR will provide lunches for 50 workers on Wednesday, June 28. If you would be able to help serve the meal, call the church office (377-4689) or email Marcia Edwards (marcia@lcrmarion.org). We will purchase sandwiches, chips, and drinks to go along with and donated desserts.

FLY (Feeding Lunches to Youth) is looking for a few items to help offset costs for our meals this year. If you are able, please pick up squeeze bottles of yellow mustard, mayo, and/or grape jelly and place them in the marked bin in the gathering space. Thank you for helping local kids have a good lunch each weekday this summer.

Summer Sidekicks are needed for Marion Cares Summer kids’ program. Adult and high school volunteers are welcome to help us Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays from 11 am to 1 pm. Contact information to sign up is on the entryway bulletin board, or email laura@marioncares.org. Save the date of Saturday, July 29th for the Marion Cares “Uplift Uptown” from 3-6 pm in Marion Square Park. This will be a “friend-raiser” with church bands, food, and testimonials from kids, parents, and staff on the ministry of Marion Cares.

Water is something we use every day, but we often take it for granted. We need water to live. This summer, campers will explore water as one symbol of Christian spiritual life. Day camp kids will dive into Bible stories that shower them with awareness of God’s love for them – especially the life-giving grace God gives us through Jesus Christ. Campers at Ewalu experience and celebrate God’s grace in ways that have a lasting effect on character, empathy, and faith.

January 15 & 18: Seeing the Light

WORSHIP on SUNDAY & WEDNESDAY:

Today’s gospel from John 1:29-42 begins with John the Baptist pointing not to himself but to Jesus as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”  In a world where people often point to themselves through various social media, the gospel calls us to point to Jesus, the light of the world. This Sunday also reminds us of our own epiphanies, our own moments of “seeing the light.” Sometimes it is sudden, like Andrew and Simon as Jesus calls them to be his disciples. Often it is a slow, gradual process over a lifetime. Preacher: Pastor Dennis

DISCIPLESHIP on SUNDAY:

Christianity’s Family Tree: What Other Christians Believe and Why – Our video course continues today at 9:45 with a look at Pentecostalism.

Sunday School – Preschool through 5th graders meet in the education wing at 9:45 and learn about God’s love!

Camp Chisomo Film Premiere & Dinner

Sunday, October 2 & 5:  Increase our Faith  – Pastor Miranda preaches.

Do you ever wonder if you have enough faith? Do you ever wonder, “Can I/we really do this?” The disciples say to Jesus, “Increase our faith.”  We, too, can feel inadequate in faith, discouraged in our ability to make a difference, or wonder if we have what is needed to make it through. In our reading for today, Jesus encourages the disciples (and us) with truths about faith and about putting faith into action.

WE’RE TAKING EVERYONE TO MALAWI!

Although we won’t be getting on a plane, all of us will get the chance to experience life in Malawi through dinner and a short film that documents the progress and development of Camp Chisomo. Join us in the worship room at 5:oo pm for the film, then come to the fellowship hall for a traditional Malawian meal. Any free-will offerings you may be moved to give will go towards an agricultural project promoting sustainability in Camp Chisomo’s village in Malawi.
