Resurrection E-news: Sunday, January 28, 2017

Dear members and friends of LCR,

This Sunday, January 28, we will continue our sermon series, “Who is this Jesus?”  As we continue to discover the clues about who Jesus is, we learn

that people sensed a unique authority in Jesus’ actions and words. They are astounded at his teaching and amazed at his authority. We learn that Jesus has power, and that Jesus sides with humanity against every force that would bring death and disease. Pastor Miranda will preach on a healing story from Mark 1:21-28.

There are other upcoming events and opportunities that we want to alert you to through this weekly e-note. Our website (www.lcrmarion.org) provide more details on each topic.

See you on Sunday,

Pastor Dennis

Resurrection E-news: Sunday, November 26, 2017

Dear members and friends of LCR,

On this coming Sunday, November 26th, we’ll begin the season of Advent with a sermon by Pastor Miranda on preparing for the coming of our Lord. While society urges us to hurry and shop, decorate, and prepare for pageants and parties, scripture and tradition beckon us to slow down and wait. In today’s reading, Jesus encourages his followers to look forward to the day when he returns in power and glory to end all suffering.  We light a candle for hope – hope for the coming of the King who will restore and save – and hope from knowing that our Lord Jesus Christ is at work even now and will strengthen us to the end.

If you haven’t already done so, we ask you to bring your 2018 commitment forms on Sunday or mail them in to the office. As we’ve said now for a few weeks, prayerfully consider 3 key numbers: 5, 80, and 20. We’re asking everyone to consider raising their total giving by 5% in 2018. If you give $100 a month, or $100 a week, raise those amounts by $5 per month or week. Then, consider dividing your gifts in 2018 between the General Fund and a new Growth & Outreach Fund in an 80/20 ratio, with 80% designated for the General Fund and 20% to the Growth & Outreach Fund. After last Sunday, we have received 117 commitment forms (about 25% of our giving membership). The totals so far are ~$280,000 for the 2018 General Fund and $74,000 for the Growth & Outreach Fund.

There are other upcoming events and opportunities that we want to alert you to through this weekly e-note. Our website (www.lcrmarion.org) provide more details on each topic.

See you on Sunday,

Pastor Dennis

Imagine Jesus from Mary’s point of view – proud of her son, in awe of his gifts and mission, guided by love for him as a person and so much more. In this book, Adam Hamilton begins at the end, with Mary at the crucifixion and resurrection; travels back in time as she witnesses his life and ministry; and ends at the beginning, with the Christ child born in a stable, Mary’s beautiful baby. Friday, November 3rd – Mysteries of Mental Illness: One Woman’s Struggle to Regain Her Life

Our video this week features a filmed interview with Karen McCracken, a woman diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and author of Breaking Free From OCD.  “It got to a point that I would have to read every sign I saw when I went somewhere,” McCracken says. “If I saw a sign in my peripheral vision, I thought something bad would happen if I didn’t stop to read it.” During the program Lifetree participants will have the opportunity to discuss brushes with mental illness they, or people close to them, have experienced.

Friday, November 10th – Triumph Over Trauma: One Woman’s Struggle with Anorexia

Our video includes a filmed interview with a victim of anorexia whose eating disorder threatened to end her life. “The behavior and the addiction are so strong. Breaking that cycle is hell,” the woman featured in the film says. “The recovery was harder than anything I’ve ever had to do, and it meant addressing all the other issues I was facing in my life.” During the program, Lifetree Café participants will have the opportunity to share events or traumas that have impacted their own lives.

Friday, November 17th – Smile…Even When You Think You Can’t

This session will provide proven ways to cope with difficult situations in life. A short film will be shown featuring a wheelchair-bound man who competes in triathlon events. “It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by life’s hardships,” said Lifetree representative Craig Cable. “This program offers hope and some key skills that help overcome challenges.” During the program, Lifetree Café participants will have the opportunity to discuss a problem they’re currently facing and brainstorm potential solutions.

Friday, December 1st – Religious Freedom: Standing Up for What You Believe

This week we’ll view a filmed interview with former White House attorney and Air Force officer Michael Weinstein, who believes the U.S. military is under attack by a group that threatens both morale and battle-readiness: Christian fundamentalists. “What do you do when you’re forced to convert to Christianity or face incredible scrutiny during basic training?” Weinstein asks. “I went to the Academy to see what was occurring and then realized there was a much bigger problem.” During the program Lifetree participants will have the opportunity share their opinions on recent situations in which religious freedom was threatened.

Reformation 500 Celebrations

Martin Luther posted his “Ninety-Five Theses” in Wittenberg on Oct. 31, 1517, and the resulting debate about Christian teaching and practice led to changes that have shaped the course of Western Christianity ever since. At the heart of these wide-reaching changes was a deep conviction that God’s mercy or grace in Jesus is given freely to all. Join us at one or all of the following events to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther’s bold move.

Sunday, October 29At LCR we will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation with festive worship and a guest speaker from Wartburg Seminary, Prof. Timothy Snyder.

Sunday, October 29 – You are invited to our Cedar River Conference Reformation Hymn Fest, to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation! We meet at 4:00 pm at First Lutheran Church. Local Lutheran choirs will lead us in song and thanksgiving. The Hymn Fest will be followed by an Octoberfest meal: brats, sauerkraut, hot dogs for the kids, turkey dogs, baked beans, German potato salad, and German chocolate cake.

Tuesday, October 31 – At 7:00 pm we’ll show the film “Luther and the Reformation,” narrated by Rick Steves, in the LCR worship room. Refreshments and discussion will follow the movie.
