Not A Silent Night: Mary Looks Back to Bethlehem

Not a Silent Night: Mary Looks Back to Bethlehem begins Sunday, November 19 at 9:45 and run for 5 weeks in the Advent season. This DVD/book course by Adam Hamilton is led by Alyssa Weaver & Pastor Dennis.

Imagine Jesus from Mary’s point of view – proud of her son, in awe of his gifts and mission, guided by love for him as a person and so much more. In this book, Adam Hamilton begins at the end, with Mary at the crucifixion and resurrection; travels back in time as she witnesses his life and ministry; and ends at the beginning, with the Christ child born in a stable, Mary’s beautiful baby. This year, experience Advent and Christmas with Mary.

Lifetree Cafe’ in November

All Lifetree gatherings are on Friday at noon. Please join us for these fascinating events and invite a friend! Lifetree is always free.

Friday, November 3rd – Mysteries of Mental Illness: One Woman’s Struggle to Regain Her Life

Our video this week features a filmed interview with Karen McCracken, a woman diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and author of Breaking Free From OCD.  “It got to a point that I would have to read every sign I saw when I went somewhere,” McCracken says. “If I saw a sign in my peripheral vision, I thought something bad would happen if I didn’t stop to read it.” During the program Lifetree participants will have the opportunity to discuss brushes with mental illness they, or people close to them, have experienced.

Friday, November 10th – Triumph Over Trauma: One Woman’s Struggle with Anorexia

Our video includes a filmed interview with a victim of anorexia whose eating disorder threatened to end her life. “The behavior and the addiction are so strong. Breaking that cycle is hell,” the woman featured in the film says. “The recovery was harder than anything I’ve ever had to do, and it meant addressing all the other issues I was facing in my life.” During the program, Lifetree Café participants will have the opportunity to share events or traumas that have impacted their own lives.

Friday, November 17th – Smile…Even When You Think You Can’t

This session will provide proven ways to cope with difficult situations in life. A short film will be shown featuring a wheelchair-bound man who competes in triathlon events. “It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by life’s hardships,” said Lifetree representative Craig Cable. “This program offers hope and some key skills that help overcome challenges.” During the program, Lifetree Café participants will have the opportunity to discuss a problem they’re currently facing and brainstorm potential solutions.

Friday, December 1st – Religious Freedom: Standing Up for What You Believe

This week we’ll view a filmed interview with former White House attorney and Air Force officer Michael Weinstein, who believes the U.S. military is under attack by a group that threatens both morale and battle-readiness: Christian fundamentalists. “What do you do when you’re forced to convert to Christianity or face incredible scrutiny during basic training?” Weinstein asks. “I went to the Academy to see what was occurring and then realized there was a much bigger problem.” During the program Lifetree participants will have the opportunity share their opinions on recent situations in which religious freedom was threatened.

Reformation 500 Celebrations

Martin Luther posted his “Ninety-Five Theses” in Wittenberg on Oct. 31, 1517, and the resulting debate about Christian teaching and practice led to changes that have shaped the course of Western Christianity ever since. At the heart of these wide-reaching changes was a deep conviction that God’s mercy or grace in Jesus is given freely to all. Join us at one or all of the following events to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther’s bold move.

Sunday, October 29At LCR we will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation with festive worship and a guest speaker from Wartburg Seminary, Prof. Timothy Snyder.

Sunday, October 29 – You are invited to our Cedar River Conference Reformation Hymn Fest, to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation! We meet at 4:00 pm at First Lutheran Church. Local Lutheran choirs will lead us in song and thanksgiving. The Hymn Fest will be followed by an Octoberfest meal: brats, sauerkraut, hot dogs for the kids, turkey dogs, baked beans, German potato salad, and German chocolate cake.

Tuesday, October 31 – At 7:00 pm we’ll show the film “Luther and the Reformation,” narrated by Rick Steves, in the LCR worship room. Refreshments and discussion will follow the movie.

Sunday School begins THIS SUNDAY

SUNDAY SCHOOL begins this Sunday, September 10!

Join us back in the education wing at 9:45 am. If you haven’t already registered your child, just bring them to the classroom for their age/grade, and you can sign them up there.

This is the first year for our wonderful new children’s ministry staff member, Jessi Heidelbauer. We are so lucky to have her at Resurrection to share her enthusiasm and love for God with our youngest members and friends.

This year we will be using the “Spark: Activate Faith” curriculum as we explore the bible on Sunday mornings. Spark features fun rotations and emphasizes hands-on activities with real life applications. Unit 1 will start us at the very beginning of CREATION. We’ll open the book of Genesis to learn about how God breathed life into the world – and into you and me!

Youth Discipleship begins soon!

You can now register your children for the 2017/2018 school year at the table in the church gathering space.

Then each group will break off for individual training specific to your volunteer area and will look ahead to the coming year. This event is for ALL volunteers working with youth and children. We look forward to teaming with you for the upcoming ministry year!
